The long waiting period for US visa appointments in India has significantly improved, as per the latest update from the US State Department. This development brings much-needed relief to students, professionals, and tourists following prolonged delays.
Visa processing times have reduced across major consulates in India. In New Delhi, student and exchange visitor visas (F, M, J) now have a wait time of just 0.5 months, down from 2 months. Business and work visas (H, L, O, P, Q) have a 1-month wait, and visitor visas (B-1/B-2) are now at 3.5 months, down from 6.5 months.
In Chennai, interview-required visas have a 3-month wait, though B-1/B-2 wait data is currently unavailable. Kolkata shows a 4.5-month average wait for B-1/B-2 visas, with next appointments in 5 months; student visas are at 2.5 months.
Mumbai’s B-1/B-2 visas have one of the longest delays in India at 9.5 months, while student visas are available in 3 months and work visas in just 1 month. In Hyderabad, visitor visas have a 4-month average wait with appointments in 5 months. Student and work visas are available in 2.5 and 2 months, respectively.
Globally, visitor visa wait times remain highest in cities like Toronto (16.5 months), San Jose (13 months), and Lagos (12.5 months).
The US State Department emphasized its dual goal of national security and processing efficiency. Wait times are calculated in 30-day increments, and applicants are encouraged to check regularly for earlier appointment openings.
These updated timelines aim to simplify the travel experience for Indian applicants seeking opportunities in the United States.
