Elon Musk Supports H-1B Visas, Highlights India’s Impact on US Economy

SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has expressed strong support for the H-1B visa program at a time when the US government has increased efforts to prevent its misuse. In an interview, Musk highlighted that the US has significantly benefited from the talent of Indian professionals, including tech workers and doctors, who make up a large portion of H-1B holders.

While acknowledging that some outsourcing companies have exploited the system, Musk emphasized that shutting down the H-1B visa would be harmful to the US. “America has benefited immensely from talented Indians… It would actually be very bad to cancel this program,” he said.

Responding to questions on immigration, Musk noted that there are varying opinions. He criticized both extremes—calling out the lack of border controls under the Biden administration and pointing to anti-immigration sentiments among right-wing groups. Musk warned against “massive illegal immigration” and stressed the importance of proper border control.

He also mentioned that the real issue isn’t foreign workers taking jobs, but rather a shortage of skilled labor. “There’s always a scarcity of talent. We need more talented people,” he explained. Musk added that his own companies prioritize skill over cost, offering high pay to attract top talent.

For young Indian entrepreneurs, Musk advised focusing on creating value. “Aim to make more than you take… pursue providing useful products and services, and money will follow,” he said. He encouraged youth to be net contributors to society through innovation and hard work.

Musk’s comments come during a time of policy changes that could impact Indian professionals aiming to work in the US. His stance supports the continuation and smart reform of the H-1B system, recognizing the value skilled immigrants bring to the tech industry and the economy.
