Amid a broader crackdown on illegal immigration, the Trump administration’s Department of Labor has accused some companies of misusing the H-1B visa program to replace young American workers with foreign talent—primarily from India. A new campaign claims that this misuse has taken away opportunities from American youths, undermining their chance to achieve the American Dream.
In a campaign video, the department states that “Indians receive 72% of H-1B visa applications,” suggesting heavy reliance on foreign professionals at the cost of American workers. The visuals contrast post-war prosperity with modern office jobs and promote President Trump and Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer’s commitment to prioritizing Americans under the “America First” approach.
The campaign supports “Project Firewall,” launched in September 2025. This initiative investigates whether companies are hiring lower-paid foreign workers—especially in tech and engineering—while sidelining qualified U.S. citizens. Audits will target firms suspected of violating wage and hiring rules related to H-1B employment.
Critics argue that the impact of H-1B workers is exaggerated. With over 163 million employed in the U.S. and a record labor force of 170.7 million, the estimated 730,000 H-1B holders comprise only a fraction of the workforce. Detractors question how such a small group could significantly disrupt American job opportunities.
Despite criticism, the labor department maintains its objective to protect American workers and uphold fair hiring. The video concludes with a strong message: “We’re reclaiming the American Dream for the American people.”
