How to Transition from H-1B Visa to Green Card Status

Many foreign professionals working in the United States on H-1B visas aspire to obtain a green card, which grants permanent residency. The H-1B visa is initially issued for three years and can be extended for another three years, allowing skilled workers to contribute to the U.S. economy during this time.

The path from an H-1B visa to a green card involves several steps. It generally starts with employer sponsorship. The employer must file a labor certification with the U.S. Department of Labor, showing that no qualified U.S. workers are available for the job. After approval, the employer can file an immigrant petition.

Once the petition is approved, the foreign worker waits for a visa number to become available. This wait time varies depending on the country of origin and type of job. After receiving the visa number, the individual can apply for an adjustment of status while remaining in the U.S.

The process may take several years due to annual limits and high demand. However, maintaining legal status and following the correct steps can eventually lead to permanent residency. Obtaining a green card also opens the path toward citizenship, provided other eligibility requirements are met, such as time spent in the U.S. and a clean immigration history.

For many foreign workers, the H-1B to green card journey represents both commitment and opportunity — offering stability, access to wider employment options, and a future in the U.S.
