Since beginning his second term, US President Donald Trump has introduced several immigration policies aimed at restricting migrant inflow to safeguard American jobs. Over the past two months, three key changes have significantly affected Indians living and working in the US.
First, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) abruptly ended the automatic renewal of Employment Authorisation Documents (EADs) as of October 30. This change affects many Indian nationals, particularly H-1B visa holders’ spouses and students on Optional Practical Training (OPT), who rely on EADs for employment. Legal experts warn this may lead to job loss due to the lengthy 7–10 months renewal process.
Second, a new annual $100,000 fee has been introduced for H-1B visa applications starting from September 21, 2025. This fee applies to new petitions for applicants outside the US without a valid visa. Employers, not the applicants, must bear this increased cost, which heavily impacts Indian tech professionals who make up 70% of H-1B recipients.
Third, USCIS has made the US citizenship process tougher. Green Card holders applying for naturalisation must now pass a more difficult civics test, which involves answering 20 questions correctly out of 128. Immigration officers will also examine applicants’ moral character more closely. Green Card holders must also undergo biometric screening at US borders.
Collectively, these policy shifts reflect the Trump administration’s broader push against immigration. Awareness and preparation are crucial for Indian individuals and companies navigating these regulatory changes.
