Thailand has tightened immigration checks on foreigners using tourist visa exemptions to frequently enter and exit the country, aiming to prevent misuse and clamp down on criminal activities. This follows instructions from Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and the National Police Chief.
The Immigration Bureau announced new restrictions on “visa runs” — where travelers repeatedly leave and re-enter Thailand to extend short-term stays. Pol Maj Cheongron Rimpadee explained that the change is part of a broader campaign targeting cybercrime and other offenses by foreign nationals exploiting visa-free stays.
Authorities found that many exploit the 90-day visa-free rule to live in Thailand long-term through organized trips to border points. This has led to illegal activities like scams, money laundering, and unauthorized business operations. Now, immigration checkpoints will deny entry to individuals performing more than two visa runs without valid reasons. These travelers will need proper visas such as for business, study, retirement, or marriage.
Despite added checks, the Immigration Bureau promises efficient processing, targeting queue times at no more than 40 minutes. Additional officers will be deployed during peak times if required. The new approach seeks to welcome legitimate tourists who contribute to the economy rather than deter visitors.
From May 1, 2025, all international visitors, including Indian nationals, must register online for a Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) within 72 hours before arriving. Since January, around 2,900 travelers have been denied entry for violating visa rules. Those on watchlists or previously deported for crossing from border areas — especially Mae Sot in Tak province — face bans.
In a recent development, India repatriated 125 citizens from Mae Sot after they were rescued from scam centers in Myanmar. The Indian government urges job seekers to verify employers and avoid misusing visa-free travel for employment in Thailand.
