Elon Musk has once again spotlighted the importance of skilled Indian professionals in the U.S. During a conversation on the “WTF is” podcast with Nikhil Kamath, Musk highlighted the value of global talent and criticized certain aspects of U.S. immigration policy, especially around the H-1B visa program.
Musk emphasized the need for strong borders, arguing that without proper control, a country loses its identity. He criticized the current administration’s approach, claiming it encourages illegal immigration due to financial and government incentives.
Despite advocating for tighter borders, Musk stressed that his companies—Tesla, SpaceX, X, and xAI—actively search for the best global talent. He rejected the idea that foreign workers displace American jobs, noting a consistent shortage of skilled professionals. “There’s always a scarcity of talented people,” Musk said, pointing to the ongoing hiring challenges his teams face.
On the topic of H-1B visas, Musk acknowledged system abuse by some outsourcing firms but supported reform instead of cancellation. “We need to stop the gaming of the system, but I’m not saying we should shut it down,” he explained.
Debate around the visa program has increased following a proposal to raise its application fee significantly. While some see this as a measure to curb misuse, others argue it could block access to deserving global talent.
India remains the largest beneficiary of the H-1B program, accounting for 71% of issued visas last year. The program, often used by tech firms, remains vital in addressing America’s tech talent shortages.
Musk’s views reflect the broader challenge the U.S. faces in maintaining border security while remaining a destination for world-class innovation and expertise.
