Tech billionaire Elon Musk has highlighted the significant contributions of Indian talent to the United States while expressing concerns about the changing attitudes towards immigration. Speaking on a podcast with Nikhil Kamath, Musk noted that the country has greatly benefited from skilled professionals from India, especially in the tech industry.
Kamath mentioned that this flow of talent seems to be slowing. Musk agreed and stressed that Indian immigrants have been a major asset to the US workforce. However, he pointed out that rising illegal immigration and political polarization have complicated the immigration dialogue.
According to Musk, the recent surge in undocumented migration has caused anxiety and made immigration a more divisive issue in America. He criticized the current policies for lacking proper border controls and added that generous social benefits may be attracting more illegal migrants.
Musk commented that the political left supports open borders, even for those with criminal backgrounds, while the right fears immigrants could take away American jobs. He challenged this notion by pointing out a consistent shortage of top talent, arguing that skilled immigration is beneficial.
When discussing the H-1B visa program, Musk acknowledged certain misuse by outsourcing firms but warned against rushing into drastic measures like shutting it down. He emphasized the need for reforms but said his own companies focus on attracting top global talent rather than cutting costs, noting that they offer above-average pay.
Overall, Musk supports skilled immigration and believes it strengthens the US economy, but he calls for a more balanced and secure system to manage it properly.
