Elon Musk recently shared his views on the H-1B visa program during an appearance on the “People by WTF” podcast hosted by Nikhil Kamath. He emphasized that the United States has significantly benefited from the talent coming from India. Musk acknowledged that while some companies have misused the H-1B visa system to cut costs, this should not be a reason to shut the program down entirely.
Responding to concerns about anti-immigrant sentiments and job competition in the US, Musk said that there is usually a shortage of skilled individuals. “More talented people would be good,” he added, suggesting that top international talent is essential for technological advancement. At his own companies, he noted they pay well above average and hire based on skill, not just cost-saving.
Musk criticized some outsourcing companies for manipulating the H-1B system but proposed correction instead of elimination. He warned that shutting down the program would harm innovation and talent inflow, especially aligning with the views of US right-wing groups.
Musk also commented on border control policies, claiming that under President Biden, illegal immigration increased due to weak enforcement. He voiced support for strict border controls but criticized the idea of closing legal channels for skilled migrants. He accused parts of the US Left of supporting open borders, even for individuals with criminal records.
The H-1B visa issue has become controversial, especially after Donald Trump’s re-election. Initially, Trump’s administration increased H-1B fees and adopted a stricter stance, but he later acknowledged the need for foreign talent, causing disagreements within his party.
