Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk recently shared his views on the significant impact of skilled Indian professionals in the United States. In a podcast conversation with Zerodha co-founder Nikhil Kamath, Musk emphasized that the U.S. has “benefitted immensely” from Indian engineers, scientists, and entrepreneurs contributing to innovation and technology development.
Kamath noted how the U.S. continues to attract brilliant minds globally, often labelled a “brain drain” for countries like India. He highlighted the increasing number of Indian-origin CEOs at top global firms as an example. Musk agreed, stating that Indian talent has been a major force in strengthening the American tech sector.
Addressing concerns about foreign workers replacing local jobs, Musk explained he hasn’t seen strong evidence of this. Instead, he emphasized how difficult it is to find skilled professionals for complex tasks, suggesting that more talent—regardless of origin—is welcome. “There’s always a scarcity of talented people,” he said.
He also mentioned that his companies—Tesla, SpaceX, X, and xAI—are focused on hiring the most talented individuals worldwide. While acknowledging some misuse of the H-1B visa system by certain outsourcing firms, Musk argued against closing it altogether. “Gaming the system should stop, but shutting it down would be harmful,” he stated.
His comments come in the wake of recent political support for the H-1B program, which enables U.S. companies to hire skilled foreign workers, especially in tech-related roles. Musk, like others, believes that bringing in global talent is essential to fill critical skill gaps while also supporting domestic workforce development.
