Tesla CEO Elon Musk has praised the significant contributions of Indian professionals to the United States’ technology and business sectors. Speaking on a podcast hosted by Nikhil Kamath, he highlighted the positive impact of Indian-origin engineers, scientists, and entrepreneurs on the US economy.
Musk emphasized the importance of the H-1B visa program, stating that it plays a crucial role in supporting American industries. However, he also acknowledged issues with the system being taken advantage of by certain outsourcing companies. He clarified that reform is needed to address the misuse but shutting the program down entirely would harm the U.S. economy.
He warned against increasing H-1B visa application fees drastically, a move recently suggested in US political circles, and criticized the lack of proper border control policies that, according to him, have led to a rise in illegal immigration. Musk argued that such issues have created a “negative selection effect.”
On employment, Musk rejected the notion that immigrants take jobs away from American workers, saying his companies often struggle to find enough skilled talent and thus depend on global expertise. He suggested that immigrants generally help fill critical gaps in the workforce.
Discussing broader economic challenges, Musk said artificial intelligence and robotics are key to addressing the United States’ growing debt, which he called “insanely high.” He warned that interest payments under the current debt scenario will keep rising.
Lastly, Musk encouraged Indian entrepreneurs to focus on building value-driven products and services. He stated that true success comes from contributing positively to society, not from simply pursuing profits.
