Impact of Trump’s Green Card Crackdown on Indian Immigrants

Following a shooting incident near the White House involving an Afghan national, the Trump administration has announced a full review of Green Cards issued to immigrants from countries considered high-risk. This decision comes after an Afghan individual allegedly opened fire on two National Guard members, resulting in the death of one and critical injury to the other.

US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) Director Joseph Edlow confirmed the review, stating it was ordered directly by former President Donald Trump. Edlow emphasized the importance of national security and blamed previous policies for endangering American citizens. He stressed that every Green Card issued to individuals from countries of concern would be thoroughly reexamined.

India is not on the list of affected nations, so Indian nationals residing in the United States will not be impacted by this review. However, the administration has not released an official list of all countries under scrutiny. Past directives issued in 2025 included nations like Afghanistan, Iran, Somalia, and Venezuela among others.

In addition to reviewing Green Cards, Trump announced a temporary halt on immigration from what he called “Third World countries” to allow the immigration system to recover. He also proposed ending federal benefits and subsidies for all non-citizens currently in the U.S.

The administration further issued guidance allowing immigration officers to consider country-specific risk factors during the application vetting process.
