India is preparing to increase its domestic coal production significantly to reduce reliance on imports and support its growing energy needs. The Ministry of Coal aims to boost annual coal production to 1.5 billion tonnes by 2030. This initiative aligns with the country’s broader strategy of self-reliance in energy and ensuring steady supply for its thermal power plants, which still generate over 70% of India’s electricity.
Government plans include encouraging private investments in coal mining through commercial mining auctions, modernizing mining technologies, and improving logistics infrastructure. These steps are expected to enhance the efficiency and output of coal extraction while keeping costs manageable.
In addition, India is focusing on sustainable mining practices. Efforts are being made to minimize the environmental impact of coal mining by investing in land reclamation, afforestation, and use of cleaner technologies. The country is also promoting the use of coal gasification and underground coal mining to reduce surface disturbances and emissions.
At the same time, India continues to expand its renewable energy capacity, aiming for a balanced and cleaner energy mix. However, coal is projected to remain a key part of the energy system for the foreseeable future, making these developments essential to support economic growth and energy security.
The government’s approach is to secure energy availability while addressing environmental concerns, ensuring that the transition to cleaner energy remains steady and inclusive.
