As Chief Minister Omar Abdullah contends with growing protests from young people, criticism from the Opposition, and dissent within his own party over the reservation policy, a Cabinet Sub-Committee has approved a report proposing key changes. The recommendations aim to ensure that at least 50% of available seats or jobs are retained for open merit or general category candidates. This move seeks to balance reservation benefits with opportunities for the general category public and address mounting dissatisfaction.
Meanwhile, Indian exports face mounting challenges following the United States imposing steep 50% tariffs on certain goods starting August 27. Despite the decline in shipments to the US, Indian industries have found alternative markets. For example, although exports of gems and jewellery to the US fell by 76% in September compared to last year, the total decline in the sector was limited to just 1.5%. This was due to redirection of exports to countries like the United Arab Emirates (79% growth), Hong Kong (11%), and Belgium (8%). Other sectors, including shrimp, auto components, and electric machinery, have also been able to shift exports toward Asian and European markets, mitigating some of the impact of the US tariffs.
