Since early 2020, major US tech giants have invested nearly $17 billion in India. Amazon pledged $1 billion, Facebook invested $6 billion, and Google committed $10 billion. These investments are part of a larger trend, with over $20 billion flowing into India’s tech sector this year, mostly from the US.
Just months ago, tensions between these tech firms and Indian regulators made such investments seem unlikely. However, the COVID-19 pandemic and India’s strained relations with China have shifted the landscape. With restricted business both in China and Hong Kong, India now appears as a more attractive market for American tech companies.
India’s massive digital economy—boasting over 700 million internet users—is too large to ignore. Experts believe the Indian market offers long-term value with expectations of fair regulation. The historical connection between Indian professionals and Silicon Valley also strengthens this bond, with top positions at Google and Microsoft held by Indians.
A significant portion of these US investments has gone to Jio Platforms, a digital wing of Reliance Industries led by billionaire Mukesh Ambani. Jio, launched in 2016, has grown swiftly and is branching into e-commerce, payments, and streaming. Its powerful market presence and fewer regulatory hurdles make it an ideal partner for foreign tech firms.
Experts view Reliance as a vital gateway into India’s digital realm. As global restrictions impact innovation centers like the US, India becomes increasingly important for tech expansion. With new digital habits formed during the pandemic and supportive local partners, US tech companies are deepening their roots in India’s dynamic market.
