Elon Musk, the world’s richest man and head of companies like Tesla, SpaceX, and X, recently appeared on the “People by WTF” podcast hosted by Zerodha co-founder Nikhil Kamath. In the interview, Musk stated that the United States has significantly benefitted from welcoming talented Indians, citing tech leaders like Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and Google CEO Sundar Pichai as prime examples of Indian contributions to the U.S. economy.
The conversation comes amid changing U.S. immigration policies, particularly around the H-1B visa program, which has long provided a pathway for skilled Indian professionals to work and settle in the U.S. Musk acknowledged that while there has been some misuse of the H-1B program, especially by outsourcing firms, it should not be shut down. Instead, he called for reforms to prevent the system from being exploited.
During the discussion, Musk criticized what he described as overly relaxed immigration policies under the Biden administration, highlighting the importance of secure borders and legal immigration systems. He emphasized that having talented individuals is critical to solving complex problems and insisted that companies must look for skill over cost-cutting strategies.
Speaking directly to aspiring Indian professionals, Musk advised, “Be a net contributor to society. Ensure that what you give back is more than what you take.” He also mentioned that his companies actively seek talented individuals and compensate them above industry averages.
The future of the H-1B visa program remains uncertain amid debates and proposals to hike application fees or restrict access. Yet recent statements by Trump signal a possible shift, showing openness to highly skilled immigrants who can contribute to advanced technology sectors in the U.S.
