Elon Musk, the world’s richest man, recently appeared on the “People by WTF” podcast hosted by Zerodha co-founder Nikhil Kamath. In this discussion, Musk acknowledged the significant contributions that talented Indians have made to the US economy, citing tech leaders like Satya Nadella of Microsoft and Sundar Pichai of Google as prominent examples.
Musk highlighted that America has greatly benefited from skilled Indian professionals, while also addressing the growing anti-immigration sentiment. He attributed part of this backlash to past abuses of the H-1B visa program and policies that lacked strict border controls.
He expressed concern over the misuse of the H-1B program by outsourcing firms but clarified he does not support shutting it down. Instead, he called for reform to prevent system manipulation. “We must stop the gaming of the system,” Musk said, while praising the value that talented immigrants add when they become net contributors to society.
Kamath pointed out the recent tightening of H-1B rules, which have impacted Indian job seekers. Elon Musk responded by emphasizing that his companies—SpaceX, Tesla, and X—actively seek out global talent, offering above-average pay for skills and innovation.
Discussing U.S. immigration policies, Musk criticized what he saw as excessive leniency under the Biden administration and emphasized the importance of secure borders to maintain national integrity. He also commented that there’s always a shortage of skilled individuals, and hiring should focus on talent, not just cost savings.
While former President Trump suggested steep hikes in H-1B application fees, he has recently shown openness to skilled immigration, especially in critical tech sectors such as semiconductors and defense.
