Iran Halts India Visa Waiver Citing Criminal Element Misuse Concerns

Iran has officially suspended its visa-free entry policy for Indian passport holders starting Saturday. This decision comes in light of several reported incidents where Indian nationals were misled with false job offers or promises of transit to other countries through Iran. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) of India confirmed the suspension on Monday, stating it aims to prevent further exploitation of the visa waiver by criminal groups.

Earlier, in February 2024, Iran introduced a visa waiver program allowing Indian tourists a single visit every six months, with a maximum stay of 15 days. However, this privilege was often misused, with individuals being lured into the country under false pretenses and later falling victim to ransom-related kidnappings.

Starting now, Indian citizens with ordinary passports must apply for a visa to enter or transit through Iran. The MEA has strongly advised Indian travelers to stay alert and avoid dealing with unauthorized agents claiming to offer employment or onward travel via Iran without a visa.

The Indian government had previously issued a caution in September, urging citizens to be highly vigilant regarding fraudulent job offers linked to travel through Iran. It reiterated that visa-free entry to Iran is strictly for tourism and not for employment or other unofficial purposes.

Authorities are continuing efforts to ensure the safe return of affected individuals and warn travelers to remain cautious of deceptive travel schemes.
