Starting November 22, 2025, Indian citizens holding ordinary passports will no longer be able to enter or transit through Iran without a visa. Iran has officially suspended its visa waiver facility for Indian travelers, citing concerns about rising incidents of human trafficking and individuals being misled with false promises of employment or further travel.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) of India confirmed that the decision aims to prevent criminal misuse of the visa-free entry. They highlighted cases where Indians who traveled to Iran under the previous waiver program were kidnapped for ransom soon after arrival. The MEA has issued a caution to Indian citizens to remain alert and avoid unauthorized agents offering visa-free travel deals or deceptive transit offers through Iran.
Originally introduced in February 2024, Iran’s visa waiver program allowed citizens from over 30 countries, including India, to enter visa-free for up to 15 days within a six-month period. This was intended strictly for tourism and did not allow for any form of employment.
From November 2025 onwards, all Indian travelers with ordinary passports must apply for a visa to enter or transit through Iran. The Indian government advises travelers to seek accurate, official information before making travel plans and to be cautious of any offers that appear too good to be true.
