Stricter US immigration policies are prompting many Indian families to rethink marriage plans involving relatives and Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) based in the United States. Growing uncertainty around job security and visa status, especially with changes to the H-1B visa program, is making families cautious.
For years, Indian citizens working in the US were seen as ideal marriage prospects. However, recent policy shifts have created anxiety. Sidhi Sharma, a 19-year-old medical student from Haryana, once dreamed of marrying someone with a stable US job, but she has changed her mind due to concerns over immigration rules.
With Indians making up the majority of H-1B holders—most of them men—many worry their visa could be revoked, affecting their employment and ability to stay in the US. Matchmaking services are seeing reduced interest in NRI grooms and have started adapting by introducing visa status filters to their platforms.
Platforms like Knot.dating have responded by showing a suitor’s visa status upfront. “Families want to see the visa status before taking things further,” said CEO Jasveer Singh. This shift reflects a growing concern about financial and residential stability linked to immigration issues.
While the US was once the top choice for such alliances, families are now looking at other destinations like Canada, the UK, Europe, and the Middle East for marriage prospects. These countries are seen as offering better mobility and security under current global immigration trends.
As the dream of starting a new life in the US becomes less certain, many Indians are reevaluating their priorities when it comes to overseas marriages and long-term stability.
