A sharp increase in H-1B visa costs and immigration pressures under Donald Trump’s leadership are prompting many Indian professionals to reconsider moving to the US. Starting September 2025, the new application fee for H-1B visas will surge to $100,000, making it far less accessible than before.
This change, along with a tougher stance on employment-based immigration, has led many Indians to explore more secure and cost-effective alternatives. Among these, the EB-1A and EB2-NIW visa categories are gaining popularity.
The EB-1A green card is intended for individuals with exceptional talent in science, arts, business, education, or athletics. It allows professionals to apply without needing a job offer or employer sponsorship, as long as they can meet three of ten specific criteria showing their national or international recognition.
Similarly, the EB2-NIW (National Interest Waiver) visa is drawing attention. It targets professionals whose work benefits the US in critical areas, allowing them to apply for a green card without employer backing.
Recent data shows a 56% increase in EB-1A applications in the first quarter of FY25, with many expected from Indian applicants. This shift reflects a preference for immigration paths that offer long-term stability, especially as job layoffs continue in the tech sector.
Many professionals now prioritize options that offer more control over their immigration status and don’t depend on fluctuating job markets. Experts note that Indian nationals already form a significant part of the EB-1A application pool, indicating a larger trend toward visa categories that support long-term settlement.
