Veteran Bollywood actor Dharmendra passed away on Monday morning in Mumbai at the age of 89 due to age-related illness. He had earlier been admitted to Breach Candy Hospital in October after experiencing breathlessness and was discharged in November. His final rites were held at the Pawan Hans Crematorium in Vile Parle, Mumbai, attended by film stars such as Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, and Aamir Khan.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi mourned his death, calling it the “end of an era” in Indian cinema, praising Dharmendra’s charm, humility, and unforgettable screen presence. Actor Mahima Chaudhry shared that Dharmendra was her mother’s biggest crush, recalling fond memories of touring with him in the USA. Nimrat Kaur hailed him as “the pride of our soil,” and Jaideep Ahlawat lovingly remembered working with him in their upcoming film ‘Ikkis’, which will be Dharmendra’s final screen appearance.
Waheeda Rehman recollected how Dharmendra once agreed to a film when all others had declined. Sudhir Mishra admired his strong screen persona, while Vivaan Shah described him as a poetic soul and one of Indian cinema’s founding pillars. Jaya Bachchan once admitted having a huge crush on him, even hiding from him during their first meeting.
Union Minister Raksha Khadse highlighted the societal messages in his films, and young actor Ibrahim Ali Khan shared how Dharmendra discovered his mother Amrita Singh, forever changing their family’s destiny. J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah paid tribute, recalling Dharmendra’s frequent visits to the region and iconic roles in films like Sholay and The Burning Train.
