Many young Malaysian Indians today feel the need to distance themselves from their Indian identity in order to fit in better with the wider Malaysian society. This often stems from a deep-rooted stigma and historical baggage tied to colonial narratives, where Indians were stereotyped and divided based on occupation and social class. These stereotypes continue to impact how Indians perceive themselves and each other, especially among more privileged groups using language or socioeconomic status as a means to feel “less Indian.”
Some youth go as far as rejecting their language, culture, and traditions to appear more assimilated. This internalised racism creates a divide within the community and leaves those from less privileged backgrounds further marginalised. Efforts to align with colonial ideals—like valuing English over mother tongues—can be seen as modern extensions of the “divide and rule” strategy used during British rule.
However, positive change is happening as some Indian parents are intentionally preserving Tamil heritage by sending their children to Tamil schools. They aim to equip the next generation with cultural knowledge and shield them from racial bias. Conversations show that many young Malaysian Indians identify as Malaysians first, but struggle to balance that with acceptance of their Indian roots.
Moving forward requires a shift in mindset—both externally and within the Indian community. Schools should foster empathy, and individuals must embrace their identity fully rather than alter it for social acceptance. True progress lies in reclaiming pride in one’s heritage while embracing national unity.
