India, home to the world’s largest diaspora of over 3.5 crore people, is witnessing growing calls for the introduction of dual citizenship. IndUS Canada, representing 79 Indian diaspora organizations across the U.S. and Canada, has urged the Indian government to consider this reform, stating it would enhance India’s global standing and deepen ties with Non-Resident Indians (NRIs).
Forum leader Vikram Bajwa emphasized that dual citizenship would offer legal security and emotional assurance to millions of overseas Indians, enabling them to contribute more confidently to India. He noted that countries like the UK, Canada, Australia, Israel, and even Pakistan have empowered their diasporas with dual citizenship, leveraging them for national growth and global influence.
India currently offers Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) status, which Bajwa argues lacks core rights and safeguards. By granting dual citizenship, India could unlock strategic investments in technology, infrastructure, real estate, manufacturing, and startups.
Bajwa stressed that Indian-origin entrepreneurs and professionals in countries like the U.S. face economic uncertainties and geopolitical pressures, which dual citizenship could help mitigate by offering stability for long-term economic commitments in India.
He also pointed to rising security concerns for Indian communities abroad, especially in Canada. Dual citizenship would offer such families greater protection and institutional support. Beyond economic gains, it would enhance India’s cultural and diplomatic influence, promote tourism, and support philanthropic efforts through more accessible engagement with the homeland.
IndUS Canada urged Indian policymakers, especially Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to address this longstanding demand. They believe dual citizenship is a forward-looking step that aligns with the vision of a developed India—Viksit Bharat—and will help India realize its full global potential.
