Police in Marseille, France, arrested a man suspected of being linked to a plot to attack the Olympic Games this summer. The 18-year-old Chechnya-born suspect was detained on May 22 and is alleged to have planned a terror attack targeting the Stade Vélodrome, a venue for several Olympic football matches.
According to France’s national anti-terrorism prosecutor’s office, the suspect wanted to target spectators and police officers during the event. Authorities consider this a serious threat, aiming to spread panic during the major international competition.
This marks the first reported foiled threat against this year’s Summer Olympics in Paris. Security has been at the forefront of preparations, with more than 45,000 police officers expected to be deployed during the event. Special attention is being given to the opening ceremony, which will take place along the River Seine with large crowds expected.
Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin confirmed the arrest and emphasized that the country remains on high alert against terrorism. French authorities continue to monitor and investigate potential threats closely, aiming to ensure the safety of athletes and visitors from around the world.
The Paris Olympics are scheduled to begin on July 26 and end on August 11, with officials committed to maintaining strict security throughout the games.
