Traffic Woes Discourage NRIs From Returning to India for Retirement

A Non-Resident Indian (NRI), Naresh, has sparked an online discussion after sharing his experience of moving back to India with his wife after living in the United States for 25 years. As he and his wife approach retirement, several of their US-based friends are exploring the idea of retiring in India. While there are many positive aspects such as affordable healthcare and family support, Naresh stated that traffic chaos in Indian cities is a major deterrent for many NRIs considering the move.

In a social media post, Naresh wrote, “Wife and I lived in the US for 25 years and returned to India. We’re nearing retirement, and some friends are asking about life here. There are many advantages, but the biggest deal-breaker is the horrendous traffic.” He emphasized the need for urgent action to improve traffic conditions, which he believes could encourage more financially stable NRIs to return and invest in the Indian economy.

His post quickly gained attention online, crossing 7.2 lakh views and triggering hundreds of reactions. Many agreed with Naresh, with users commenting on the poor traffic sense and road safety in India. “More than the traffic volume, it’s the lack of traffic sense,” one user said. Another added, “Terrible road safety is why many NRIs avoid returning.”

Some, however, offered alternative perspectives. One user noted that if retired, time isn’t a constraint, so traffic wouldn’t matter as much. Another suggested that tier 3 or 4 cities may provide a better option for retirement with better amenities, safety, and social life.
