How a Viral AI Pen Failed to Assist with Cheating

A new wave of cheating methods is hitting college campuses, and it’s not just about ChatGPT anymore. Recently, a student shared details about a new physical tech tool aimed at helping students cheat during exams — especially those that are back in traditional paper format, as universities try to stay ahead in the battle against AI misuse.

This particular tool looks like a slim TV remote, equipped with a screen and side buttons. It functions as a text scanner. A camera, placed between two small prongs at the end of the device, lights up and scans text from a physical page. The device then processes the data, possibly using built-in AI or internet access, and provides answers instantly.

Advertised under names like “AI Smart Pen” or “ChatGPT pen,” these gadgets are making the rounds on platforms like YouTube Shorts. Short videos, styled from a student’s point of view, show people secretly pulling these pens out to scan test papers right on their desks. Some of these videos have racked up hundreds of thousands of views, showing how popular and widespread the trend is becoming.

One example video, labeled with tags such as #ai #pen #gadget, displays the device scanning a question asking for the name of the first U.S. president. The overlay text in the video jokes, “I needed this back in high school.” With AI’s presence in education only growing, so are the creative ways some students are finding to exploit it.

Experts warn that as long as high-tech tools exist, students determined to cheat may always find a new way.
